This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to drive a heavy rigid vehicle safely in compliance with relevant state/territory road and traffic authority licence requirements and regulations including road rules for heavy rigid vehicles.
On successful completion of the requirements of the Unit of Competency students are issued with a Statement of Attainment.
You must complete the unit of competency and be issued with the Statement of Attainment before you can attempt the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).

Department of Transport (DOT) Pre-Requisites
Must have hold:
- Car (C class) licence for at least 2 years, or
- Light rigid (LR) vehicle licence for at least 1 year, or
- Medium Rigid (MR) vehicle licence for at least 1 year.
There are three HR licence types you can choose from. They are:
- HR-A (Automatic)
- HR-B (Manual / Synchromesh)
- HR-Open (Road Ranger)
HR-A Automatic Training and Assessment
HR-A Automatic Licence allows you to drive HR Automatic Vehicles only.

HR-Open (Road ranger) Training and Assessment
The HR-Open licence allows you to drive vehicles with a Road Ranger gearbox (double clutch) which includes a ‘’double-clutching’’ technique to enable smooth gear changing.

HR Licence allows you to drive Heavy Rigid – more than 8 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass (no axle limit) +/- trailer (max 9 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass).
Open new possibilities with an open class HR Driving Licence. This licence entitles you to drive a Heavy Vehicle with 3 or more axles and a gross vehicle mass of 8000 kg.
All HR assessments are conducted with our DOT Approved Assessors onsite.
If you hold an interstate or international licence, please contact the Department of Transport to obtain either a Learners’ Permit or transfer your interstate licence to a WA licence.
Upon completion we will provide you with a Statement of Attainment and other documents that you will take to the WA Department of Transport DOT Licensing Centre. The Department of Transport then issues the licence.
